The Duke of Gloucester and his family arrived in Sydney to cheering crowds to take up his position as Governor General of Australia. (January 1945 - January 1947) Reports suggest they found the heat, the rats, the snakes and the flies and the isolation of Yarralumla a strain, but put up a brave show. (Chris Cunneen). A far cry from the City we enjoy today. The Duke of Gloucester Sash was the first trophy the Duke presented to any organisation after his arrival in Australia.
