The Duke of Gloucester and his family arrived in Sydney to cheering crowds to take up his position as Governor General of Australia. (January 1945 - January 1947)
Reports suggest they found the heat, the rats, the snakes and the flies and the isolation of Yarralumla a strain, but put up a brave show. (Chris Cunneen). A far cry from the City we enjoy today.
The Duke of Gloucester Sash was the first trophy the Duke presented to any organisation after his arrival in Australia. The Duke was reported to be a dog lover and was to have kennels built at Yarralumbla.
